The Small Queer Press Book Club is a continuous 2026 book club at The Pond aiming to uplift queer published works from smaller -mostly indie and micro- presses focusing on diverse stories of LGBTQIA+ life and people.
The book club will run in 2-3 month cycles, each cycle focusing on a different press.
In August to October we are exploring the works from Dead Ink. For September we are reading “A Visitation of Spirits” by Randall Kenan:
This is the powerful story of Horace Cross, a popular and high-achieving sixteen-year-old boy, who wrestles with the guilt of discovering who he is, a young man attracted to other men and yearning to escape the narrow confines of Tims Creek. Raised on stories of prophets, revelations, and dreams, his internal struggles take shape in his mind as demons and angels battling for his soul, culminating in one night of horrible and tragic transformation. Horace seeks help from his cousin, Reverend James 'Jimmy' Greene, but he finds himself ill-prepared to help the boy, plagued by demons of his own. And as Horace spirals out of control, Jimmy must ask himself what it says about him and his community that they cannot reconcile the spirits of the past with those of the future.
Dead Ink is a publisher based in the North of England. They are unsatisfied with the mainstream, and their aim is to do whatever they want and do it well. Over the years they have revived cult texts and launched wildly inventive, experimental projects that everybody said would never work. They invite you to step out of the mainstream and into something more interesting.
