A Short Guide for Beginners

This guide is meant for people who know basically nothing about table top roleplaying, but it could be helpful for anyone to read through!

Word/abbreviation list:

Character sheet: A piece of paper that tells you everything you need to know about the character you're playing.

D6: 6-sided dice.

GM: Game master, the person playing all the characters that the players encounter, describes the scenes, and reveals the mystery.

MOTW: Monster of the Week, It's a TTRPG system that I use (yes there are more TTRPG's than just DND).

Player: You! the people playing the main characters.

Stats: Referring to the numbers you add to your dice roll. The GM will ask you to roll, to be able to do something difficult. The result of your dice roll is added to the specific trait stat that applies to the action (e.g. if you want to convince someone, it would be the stat "charm").

TTRPG: Abbreviation of table top roleplaying game.

What do you need to be able to do to play?

- read small to medium sized text

- communicate verbally

- do simple addition

What is table top roleplaying?

In table top roleplaying (TTRPG), there is a host/game master (GM), who is effectively the storyteller. You (the player) are a character in that story. The GM acts out any other characters that are not played by the players, and you decide what your own character says and does.

Example:

GM: You can go to the hospital and check on the victim if you want?

Player: yeah ok, let's do that

GM: you enter the hospital's waiting room. There is a reception, and a few patients waiting for treatment.

Player: ok I want to go talk to the receptionist and lie that I'm the victims family member

GM: cool, the receptionist greets you after taking a sip of her coffee "good morning, what can i help you with?"

Player: "hi uhm, so my uhh brother John Casey, he was in an accident. I'm here to see him"

GM: Roll Charm to see how that goes

Player: *rolls 2 6 sided dice*, a 1 and a 3, plus the character's charm stat of 1, that gives 5, which is a fail.

GM: "oh uh, I mean I just let his brother in, I don't think we have a different brother on file..." As she says this the real brother steps out of the waiting room. He doesn't acknowledge you at all. The receptionist gives you a weird look and slowly backs away, reaching for the security button. What do you do?

Player: I run in the direction the real brother came from!

What to keep in mind when roleplaying?

  • Be creative, but realistic. Think about what your character should be able to do.

  • Interact with the other players

  • Have fun

  • Listen to the GM

  • Work together! this is not a competitive game, but a collaborative one.

  • Be respectful of eachothers space and belongnings
